When the Metaverse becomes a National Project

Metaverse 201: Digital Twins — Part 1

Elsewhere in the Metaverse

  • London-based VC firm Hiro Capital launched a $340 million fund dedicated to gaming and Metaverse-related companies. As one of the founders, Luke Alvarez explained, “we are at a pivotal moment in the very early phases of the Metaverse, VR, AR, and Web3.” We noticed as well.
  • XRHealth, the virtual healthcare pioneer founded in 2016, secured a $10 million fundraising round from investors including AARP. The money will be channeled towards expanding the range of available VR-based therapies and clinics. Eran Orr, its CEO, wants to “create a new form of healthcare that is accessible at any time of the day, from any location in the virtual environment of the Metaverse…” Hopefully there are good entertainment options in virtual waiting rooms.
  • Meta and Verizon entered into a strategic partnership to examine edge computing requirements for Metaverse applications. The two companies will focus on how Verizon’s Multi-Access Edge Computing infrastructure can enable lower latency and help XR cloud rendering and will develop a platform powerful enough for the core needs of the Metaverse. One thing is certain: it’s a good time to be a computer nerd.
  • The Metaverse was the star of this year’s Mobile World Congress that took place in Barcelona. The world’s biggest trade show for the mobile phone industry featured hardly any presentations that did not at least give lip service to the Metaverse. BT’s CEO of consumer brands astutely pointed out that “at the moment, you can put the word metaverse in most things with job titles or initiatives and it sort of makes something that’s not yet that clear seem very modern and exciting.” Please don’t take aim at the word meta next, that would be tough on us.

Looking Ahead
